Hideyo
McDonnell, colleague and dear friend, died on 21st December
2005. She had been ill for a long time, but the sudden worsening
of her condition came as a shock. She is greatly missed.
Hideyo
grew up in Japan and trained as a jeweller. Unusually for
a young Japanese woman in those days she then travelled extensively
before marrying an Australian and coming to Braidwood where
her three children were born. She originally joined the Silken
Tent to sew the bed linen. Soon, as is the way of things,
she became involved in the printing and began to produce stencilled
designs of great elegance and simplicity. The 'Banksia' set
- illustrated below, is one of her stencils. She also had
work in the Silken Tent Exhibition at Megalo Gallery in Canberra
in 2004. It was hoped she would design a complete range of
bed linen based on Australian plants. She also planned to
take up jewellery making again and was clearing her garage
to make a studio when she first became ill. It is such a shame.
